Featuring Marie Taglioni (1804-1884),the renowned ballerina of the European Romantic era,was born in Sweden, rose to prominence in Italian and Parisian ballets, beginning in 1832 in La Sylphide in which she danced the entire performance en pointe. She retired from performing in 1847 but remained a guiding spirit of the Paris Ballet for several decades more.
The paper doll set highlights costumes from her most famous performances, and the boxed set includes the double-sided doll,5 double-sided costumes,3 head-dresses (including one elaborately cut mask). The set is contained in its antique box, 6 1/2" x 10",having embossed green sides, gilt edging, and delicately engraved lid. The paper doll and her wardrobe are engraved and hand- colored, both front and back. Of the three known versions of the Taglioni paper doll, this is the largest (9”) and the first printe. Good condition (only the pink dress of Sylphide lose the wings). Only few examples of the very rare luxury set are known to exist, made more remarkable by the fine state of preservation. On the Theriault's auction "Paper Dolls, 1790-1940 - The Collection of Shirley Fischer" the same Taglioni set (+ 3 extra gowns and 6 head dresses) has been sold for $10250.00 France, circa 1835.
