Rare poured wax Edwards recumbant baby, English circa 1860, Montanari.

The slightly turned head with blue glass eyes, inserted lashes, painted down turned mouth and shoulder-plate to cloth body with wax lower bent arms and legs, wearing original white cotton dress, underclothes and bonnet.
This treasured wax doll is unsigned however the narrow waisted body type, the molded sculpted eye lids all suggest this is a Montanari doll.
Her big blue glass eyes are so attractive with her origianl inset blonde hair above her perfectly detailed feathered eye brows. She has her original blonde inset hair.
This doll looks so original and her body is perfect. Eerything fits her like a glove and it looks as if these clothes have never been removed from her. She has finely defined fingers.
Excellent original condition!

Augusta Montanari was born in England in 1818. She married her Corsican husband with records of their having lived in England and in USA. The dolls were noted for the fine costuming by Augusta Montanari as well as the ethnic characterization of the Mexican and Indian (Native American) dolls. Two years after the Pierotti dolls won at the London exhibition of 1840,
Montanari dolls won at the Great Exhibition in 1851. They were also displayed at the 1855 Paris Exhibition and again at the 1878 exhibition in Paris.
