Rare French Musical Automaton by Louis Renou with two dolls Jumeau Mascotte and Gaultier Antique dolls at Respectfulbear.com

16 1/2" (42 cm.) excluding hat. Very rare, unusual and fascinating automaton by Louis Renou.

Arranged upon a dark blue velvet-covered base are two bisque-head dolls,including the lady mom,and her little girl,each with paperweight eyes,painted features,and closed mouth.

The mom is holding a milk bottle in her left hand, but the little girl hold a tobacco pipe in her left hand. The baby standing on the table. When wound,music plays and the mom alternately turns her head, and try to give the nipple to her girl. Meanwhile, the small doll smoking a pipe. Music plays.

Condition: generally excellent,mechanism and music function well.
The large doll marked M.1 (Jumeau&Siem Mascotte) and the small Gaultier doll marked 4/0.

Very rare and delightful mechanical automaton,the dolls (one by Jumeau,one by Gaultier) are wearing beautiful costumes with rich decorations.

The baby's pipe seems very unusual, but the pipe and the smoking baby are both original. First, Renou made some really very unusual automatons. Second, it was much more acceptable for children to smoke in the end of 19th century. Ironically is the large number of turn-of-the-century (1900) European postcards featuring boys and girls age 4 to 8, with cigars or cigarettes. Cartoons and jokes involving child smokers abounded during the 1800s and early 1900s.
