Bisque socket head with ebony-black complexion, large amber brown glass paperweight inset eyes with spiral threading, dark eyeliner, painted lashes, black brush-stroked brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with very full coral-shaded lips, pierced ears with red earrings, original black fleecy wig over cork pate, French black wooden fully jointed body, fine antique cotton costume and red silk headdress, undergarments, socks, vintage leather shoes.
10" (25 cm.) Condition: generally excellent. Her bisque free of hairline, restoration or any damages. A wooden body has original painting. Marks: Paris Bebe Tete Depose 1 (incised). Danel & Cie, circa 1889, Paris Bebe by Danel et Cie. The bebe was introduced in that year and made for two years only. Danel had been a former key figure in the Jumeau firm, but left Jumeau to create his own dolls which were exact models of the Jumeau bebe. A successful lawsuit was brought against him by Jumeau in 1892, with the result that Danel's Paris Bebe was made for two years only. The rarity of the pristine doll, especially rare with ebony-black complexion, original body, body finish, beautiful wide-eyed expression.
