Antique French Rare Musical Automaton "Mouse Trainer" by Renou, c. 1895
With French bisque head incised "E.1. D" for Emile Douillet", closed mouth, fixed blue eyes, pierced ears, original mohair wig on cork pate, bisque hands holding baton and the hatch to a painted tin cage which sits on the table in front of her, on velvet-covered base with going-barrel mechanism playing one air, dressed in the original aqua satin costume and matching bonnet, height of the automaton 16 1/2 in (41 cm), with Renou key and stop/start. The girl nods her head and beats time with the baton, as though directing her unusual pet who runs across the table, turns in a circle and then returns obediently to his cage when the hatch is raised. Overall an amusing automaton featuring a beautiful bebe in very well-preserved original working condition.
