22" (55 cm) Steiner Gigoteur Bebe doll – a magical combination of mechanical marvel and beauty.

22" (55 cm) Extremely rare Antique Earliest Open mouth unmarked Bebe Gigoteur Steiner Doll working talking clockwork, C. 1870

This doll is extremely rare the earliest model of Steiner Gigoteur French doll with totally white bisque.

Wonderful "crying – kicking Steiners" dolls were originally designed to portray agitated infants. When the internal mechanism is wound and while lying on its back, the doll cries, while moving its arms, legs and head in a realistic manner. When lifted, the arms, legs and head continue to move, but the bebe changes its cry to a definite "Mama" and "Papa" – a feature that was surely nothing short of magic to a nineteenth-century child!

The doll boasts a perfect bisque solid dome head, an especially wonderful expression complete with an open mouth and two rows of teeth, pretty blue paperweight eyes, an original human hair wig.
Featuring a body in good condition with composition limbs.

The doll's presentation includes absolutely fantastic original french pique dress with soutache embroidery and lace bonnet, beautiful antique cotton underwear. She has an original socks and white leather shoes with mark C.M. in the circle.
Featuring a mechanism in freshly-cleaned, perfect working order, this bebe is a truly great example of Steiner ingenuity combined with sheer beauty.

Unmarked, early 1870.
