18" (46 cm.) Antique French bisque automaton "Troubadour" by Roullet et Decamps, c.1900
Standing upon a velvet-covered base is a bisque doll with brown glass eyes, mohair lashes, open mouth, four porcelain teeth, new mohair wig, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, bisque forearms, wearing original gold velvet costume trimmed with gold rick-rack, with matching boots and cap, holding a mandolin. When wound, he turns his head from side to side, nods, and strums the mandolin in a realistic manner by turning his wrist to and fro, while music plays. Marks: 1300 - 4 1/2 dep SH.
