This is really a museum piece!
Very rare german papier-mache doll by the Lowenthal & Comp., Hamburg with hand painted gace, in original preservation, up-painted black/brown hood, fabric legs with painted pink socks, wooden hans, black buckled shoes that are belonging to the traditional regional costume of the Vierlande. This doll is presented in the famous book GERMAN PAPIER-MACHE DOLLS 1760-1860 by Christiane Grafnitz, page 60. The doll in very good condition. The dress has some small mole holes because age. 10 1/2 i (27 cm) tall Germany, 1840, Lowenthal & Comp., Hamburg . The dolls of this manufacturer are hard to find! Papier-mache manufacturer in Hamburg, According to Cieslik, there weren't just a papier-mache factories in Sonnebergm there was also one in Hamburg in 1836- the Lowenthal & Comp. In 1844 it took part in the Trade Exhibition in Berlin with a number of dolls and doll's heads. In detail these were, according ti Cieslik, " papier-mache doll's heads and dolls, lacquered dolls heads, girls, men's, Turkish, curled, straight haired, Chinese, Scotch, Provencal, and Vierlander (Vierland - formerly an area north of Hamburg) ..."
